We don't have an exact account of the martyrdom of Edith Stein in Auschwitz but we can make a few conclusions from her writings when the Anti-Semitism of the Nazi regime was waging and from eyewitness account of her journey to Auschwitz. However, there is sufficient reason to believe that she was killed in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau (as was practiced in that concentration camp at the time of her alleged "extermination"). However, aside from that final moment of her martyrdom, her way of the cross started earlier on. Let me just enumerate a few without going into details: 1.) Due to the Anti-Semitism of the the Nazi regime, she had to give up her academic career (although she was able to continue writing and this eventually led to her entrance to Carmel). 2.) As a Jewess, she closely identified herself with "her people" -- their suffering were hers too, as we can induce from her words to her sister, Rosa, as she was leaving Echt Carmel: "Come, let us go for the sake of our people". She had previously written a request to her superior to be able to make a self-offering for the sake of her people. Her writings also show her growing understanding of the identification of her fate with that of her people. 3.) Her suffering took the form of a moral torture. She endured the inhumane treatment of the Nazi guards, the overpowering feeling of hopelessness in the concentration camp, the inhuman conditions of the train carts that transported her from Echt to Westerbork, and finally to Auschwitz-Birkenau. She underwent the humiliating "physical examinations" in the camp. More information can be accessed through: http://www.ocd.pcn.net/ed_en.htm#Search
