The first woman admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was Ellen H. Swallow, better known by her married name, Ellen Swallow Richards. Ellen Swallow Richards was admitted to MIT as a special student in 1870, beginning classes in 1871. She received a bachelor's degree in 1873 and went on to become MIT's first female instructor and a pioneer in sanitation and environmental health.
