FDR brought the US through the great depression by introducing the idea of big government and a greatly expanded the role of the federal government in social services. Revised versions of several of the programs and agencies which began in his first two terms are still in place. He helped reform banking, pushed rural electrification and the TVA and started social security.
He began the idea of the US keeping a standing military force, ready to react to trouble anywhere in the world. Indirectly he thus made the military establishment a major and seemingly permanent force in the economy. It also brought the country completely out of depression and opened jobs to women. He made the US a supplier of arms for the Allied Powers and so drew the US into World War II. The immediate reason for war was the surprise attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. After we declared war on Japan, Germany immediately declared war on us.
He served as President during most of the World War II and saw the end of the war in Europe. He agreed to the unfortunate peace plan that left much of Eastern Europe under Soviet control.
He was elected four times and died early in his fourth term. He indirectly brought around the 22nd amendment to the constitution which limits the terms of the president to two.
