Well the Scots were in WW 2 since the begining. After the invasion of Poland in 1939 which started WW 2, Britain and France declared war on Germany. And Scotland was part of the British Empire, so they sent troops.
Italy, Germany and Japan on one side and USA, UK, France and Spain on the other.
Following the defeat of Poland, Hitler ordered his generals to attack France through Belgium and the Netherlands. This what happened in WW 1 and France expected the same strategy for WW 2. German generals were reluctant to begin an immediate offensive against the French.
Neither country wanted to be conquered by Germany.

For all practical purposes the Europeans early in WW 2 were shaken by Hitler's Blitzkrieg. Later when the US entered the war, the new western allies were able to push back German forces completely out of France. In WW 1 this was never possible.The Soviets, unlike Russia in WW1 were able to counter attack the German invasion in Russia. The combined WW 2 allied success in WW 2 was totally different than in WW 1.
The capture of Paris in WW 2 by the Allies, was another step towards their invasion of Germany.

Germany and France had a long-running dispute over which country owned the province of Alsace-Lorraine. They fought three wars about this, which were, the Franco-Prussian War, WW I, and WW II. Alsace-Lorraine remains part of France, and now that France and Germany are both part of the European Union, they are not going to fight about that anymore.
