Galileo Galilei is credited with being the first to use a telescope to study the heavens systematically in the early 17th century. His observations of celestial bodies through the telescope led to significant discoveries in astronomy.
He invented the reflecting telescope. Galileo was the first to use the telescope for studies of the heavens.
A spy glass (telescope).
Galileo Galilei first used a telescope to look at the stars in 1609.
Note that Galileo did not invent the telescope. He was, however, the first person to use a telescope to examine the heavens. Previously, telescopes had only been used to look at distant locations here on Earth.
I believe Galileo Galilei was the inventor of the telescope, which he then use to make observations about the heavens. Kepler then refined these observations, which Sir Isaac Newton then condensed into the theory of gravitation of celestial bodies.
Galileo I am not so sure he was the first, but he is the most famous.
Galileo observed that the planets Mercury and Venus pass through phases just like the Moon. The only way this could happen is if they circled the Sun, and not the Earth. Most importantly, he discovered that Jupiter had four moons. In the 1609, Galileo heard about a new invention called a telescope. He decided to build a telescope and use it to look at the Universe. That is just what he did and that is how he learned about the universe.
While not the inventor of the telescope, Galileo is widely believed to be the first person to use a telescope for astronomy.
