Gaspar De Portola was famous for discovering something with father Junipero Serra
no
Father Junipero Serra is credited with discovering California. Once he arrived there, he set up the first missions in the area.
Check out the USC site on Portola's Expedition (you will have to pay for a map but it's the best I've seen so far). I am researching him due to my close proximity to where him and Father Serra rested in Ventura next to the Santa Clara River. Interestingly both Portola along with Serra are not Spaniards, they are Catalan men. Father Serra is from Petra, Mallorca (Balearic Islands) where they speak a dialect of Catalan. Portola is from the province of Lerida or Llieda and also has connections to the Araneses (Gascon) of the Vall De Aran, Catalunya.
