Governor of Alabama and staunch segregationist ("segregation then, segregation now, segregation forever"); however, he renounced those views late in life. While campaigning for President he was shot by a would-be assassin and became paraplegic as a result.
He tried to protest against the enrolment of two black students at the University of Alabama by standing in the doorway to stop them from entering the building, as Federal troops arrived escorting the two students. After being told he was disobeying the President's orders, he eventually stepped aside. The move was largely a publicity move made by Wallace to show he was keeping to his segregationist stance, and attracted national media attention.
