In all the reading I have done on Washington I have come to the conclusion that he was afraid that he wouldn't be taken as a serious person. He was the second son which meant that he didn't inherit his father's estate and that he had to prove himself all of his life. As a young British officer in the French and Indian war he wouldn't admit he didn't know French because all educated gentlemen in his time knew French. He admitted to the murder of a French officer because he refused to admit he didn't read or know French. This shows something of his attitude. He refused to smile because of his teeth and refused to shake hands because the thought his hands were too big. Again, this tells us something about the man. When he went to Congress to become the commander of American troops for the Revolution he had a uniform made to wear so he would look the part. I think he fought the feelings of inferiority all of his life and this was his greatest fear that someone would find out.
