James Madison was the author of Federalist 10. He wrote it because he did not want to see the United States tore apart by factions.
The big thing he did was to write and introduce the Bill of Rights which eventually became the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. He was rather a leader in the House, but gradually found himself disagreeing with President Washington's support of Hamilton and the Federalists. He opposed Jay's Treaty with England in 1794 ( see the link).
