Midway Island, and a bunch of ships in our Navy's task force.
The Battle of Midway occurred in June, 1942. The first atomic bomb was not used until August, 1945.

The emperor of Japan during WW 2 and the subsequent atomic bombing was Hirohito.
Conventional warfare with Japan was proving to be bloodier than with anyone else. The A-Bomb would prevent another conventional battle.
The US used the atomic bomb against Japan because in the Battle of Midway (a small island in the Pacific that was controlled by the Japanese in WW11) we lost 3,000 American lives. The Japanese had many more islands like Midway under there control. If we had continued to fight Japan by taking each individual island (island hopping) American loss of life would have been substantial, therefore Truman made the very hard decision to launch the atomic bomb on Hiroshama and Nagasaki. Which forced the Japanese to surrender.

The Battle of Okinawa did not lead to the atomic bomb, this battle happened in 1945 just a couple of months before the Manhattan Project completed the atomic bomb which they had been working on since 1942. With or without the Battle of Okinawa the atomic bomb would have been finished at the same time and dropped on Japan at the same time.
Watch out, there's a bomb about.
