Many have tried to explain the meaning of this name but the most popular and reliable seems to be an outcrop of rock ouside the old walls of Jerusalem that resembles a skull. This same place, in latin, is given the name "Calvariae Locus" from which we get the term 'Calvary'. Some call it the 'Hill of Calvary' - especially Victorian hymn writers - but nowhere in the gospels does it suggest that Golgotha/Calvary was a hill.
