Jesus was in Hades speaking with the imprisoned spirits for the three days between his death and resurrection.

Another View:

As Jesus was fully human, at death (grave or pit from the Hebrew 'sheol' and the Greek equivalent 'hades.') He would have been 3 full days and 3 full nights in the tomb - dead or as The Bible metaphor says asleep. His spirit would of returned to the Father while His body remained in the tomb and did not begin the decaying process:

Ecclesiastes 12:7

New International Version (NIV

)

7 and the dust returns to the ground it came from,

and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

Upon completion of the full 72 hours as promised with the only sign of His Messiahship - of Jonah in the great fish (see Matthew 12:40) - God returned His spirit into the laying body, resurrecting Him as first among many to follow.

Matthew Jesus met the two women as they returned to tell the disciples that the tomb was empty, and told them to have the disciples meet him in Galilee. He later saw the disciples in a mountain in Galilee.

Mark

Mark, in its original form, told us nothing about Jesus after his resurrection, ending at verse 16:8, with the young man telling the women that he was risen, and the ran away, telling no one. The 'Long Ending' (verses 16:9-20), added much later to provide the necessary resurrection appearances, says that he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, then to the two of them (whether the two women of Matthew or the two men of Luke) and finally appeared to the eleven disciples at a meal.

Luke

On the day of his resurrection, Jesus met two of them, Cleopas and probably Peter, on the road to Emmaeus, but they did not recognise him until they sat down to a meal and he broke bread. That evening, he met the eleven disciples in a room in Jerusalem, then took them out towards Bethany, where he was taken up bodily to heaven.

John

Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene in the garden, but she thought he was the gardener. That evening he saw ten of the disciples in a room, Thomas being absent, and breathed on them, giving them the Holy Ghost. Some days later, he appeared once more to all the disciples in the same upper room and convinced Thomas that he was alive. He later appeared to the disciples by the Sea of Galilee.

Acts of the Apostles

Acts does not describe in detail what Jesus did as soon as he rose from the dead, but since Acts was written by the same author as Luke, we can assume continuity, except that Jesus remained much longer on earth than in Luke's Gospel. Here the risen Jesus was on earth for forty days and was seen by many, before he was taken bodily up into heaven. His last message to the disciples was to remain in Jerusalem and to wait for the Holy Ghost, which they received on the day of Pentecost.

He went to his disciples and to show he was the real Jesus, he showed them the scars on his hands and feet.
