Priest do essentially what other observant Catholics do. They celebrate one or more masses that would include the imposition of ashes. Also, they observe the laws of fasting and abstinence - that is only one full meal (and two smaller meals, no in between meal snacking) as well as abstaining from meat and meat products.
Otherwise, the priest would engage in normal pastoral work on Ash Wednesday that might include visiting the sick and homebound, appointments, etc.

On the day before Ash Wednesday the leftover palms from last year's Palm Sunday are burned and the ashes are used on Ash Wednesday to 'anoint' the faithful. Palm Sunday is when people celebrate Jesus entering Jerusalem and ash Wednesday is when you use the left over palm leaves from palm Sunday.
