Roman Catholics believe that "the rock" referred to above refers to Peter and emphasizes his leadership among the disciples, which (in their view) carries over to the Pope as Peter by tradition was said to the be first bishop of Rome.
Protestants disagree and believe that Christ told him that "upon this Revelation (Rock) he was going to build his church, and that the gates of hell would not prevail against it." And he gave Peter the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, and that whatever he loosed on earth would be loosed in heaven. And The Bible says that in the book of Acts chapters 1 and 2 when the Holy Ghost had fallen on about 120 in an upper room that Peter stood up with the other eleven and gave the first sermon and preached the Rock and that Rock was Christ. He preached repentance and remission of sins in that name, and they were also gonna be able to receive the Spirit of Christ. So the Lord, through Peter, birthed the Church. Acts 2:47 tells us that through Peter's preaching that many repented, were baptized in water, and in the The Spirit. And that many were added to the church daily such as should be saved.
