Mark 13:2 is a reference to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE, at the end of the First Roman-Jewish War. The consensus of New Testament scholars is that chapter 13 shows that the author of Mark's Gospel knew of the destruction and that the Gospel was therefore written around that year, with another reference indicating that the Gospel was not written much later than 70 CE.

It has been argued that Jesus really spoke these words, and that they do not tell us anything about the date of authorship. However, after prophesying the terrible events in Jerusalem, Jesus went on to prophesy his own return, coming in the clouds in great power and glory, within the lifetimes of those to whom he spoke. If Jesus prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem, he would have been correct in every detail, but if he prophesied his own return within a lifetime, he was wrong. Since it is not possible for a prophecy of Jesus to be wrong, both prophecies must have been the work of Mark's author.
