I love this question. I won't presume to answer for Jesus, but I would like to give my opinion:

Matthew 25:34-40 makes it pretty clear that when we do things like feed the hungry and clothe the poor, we're doing it for Jesus. Leaders of the Church won't like what I have to say BUT: when people, especially Christians and the Church, neglect to do all they can for the poor (including providing food and clothing to those they see in need), then they are, in essence, neglecting Jesus.

I'll never forget one Christmas season when my children and I didn't have enough to eat. I called quite a few churches in my area looking for help. I received several various answers: "I'm sorry. We just don't have the funds." (No funds? You mean to tell me that you built that big, beautiful addition to your building for free?) and one church receptionist actually said, "I'm sorry. We don't do that." (Don't do that? Don't feed the hungry? Don't dip into your collection plates and give to the poor in your community?)

Needless to say, I hung up the phone feeling sad and dejected. And I thought to myself, What if I weren't a Christian? What if I didn't have my faith in Jesus to help me persevere during these trying times? If I didn't already personally know Jesus, how would I have taken these rejections? What would a non-believer's reaction be?

The Church must take into consideration that they are not only an example of Jesus, they are a servant of Jesus. If the Church doesn't feed the poor, who will?

Let me just say here that there are plenty of good, loving Christian ministries and churches that DO feed the poor, clothe the naked and house the homeless. They are wonderful ministries and I praise God for them. And when some of these ministries go on TV and ask for financial support from fellow Christians, they sometimes get judged for being greedy or whatever. If these ministries can't expect financial (or other) donations from God's people, who will provide?

The Church and those who profess to be Christians must do all they can to help the poor. When they do so, they are serving Jesus.
