Copernicus went to Krakow Academy, which was founded in 1364 by Casimir II the Great, King of Poland and was the second oldest university in Central Europe, one of the oldest universities in the world. There he became interested in Astronomy as a result of his contact with Albert Brudzewski, mathematician, astronomer and diplomat. Brudzewski was an inspiring teacher, who had studied the observational astronomy of Georg von Peuerbach, who himself after a stint at the University of Ferara in Italy, went back to teach at the University of Vienna. Brudzewski was also skeptical of the geocentric view of the cosmos and was the first to suggest that the moon travels in an elipse and not a circle. Peuerbach was a probable student of Johan von Gmuenden of Vienna University. Copernicus's other teacher of Astronomy was Domenico Maria Novara di Ferara, a student of Johannes Mueller von Konigsberg, also known as Regiomontanus, another stident of Georg Peuerbach. Copernicus became Domenico's apprentis and got from him Regiomontanus's planetary positions, an important resource for the Revolutionary Theories he proposed.

Copernicus thus came from a long line of illustrious astronomers, and used his position to build up the best astronomical library of his age, that was later taken by the King of Sweden to Uppsala.
