John Rolfe was the first to plant tobacco in Virginia. Tobacco became the economic salvation of the colony and, for years, its biggest cash crop.
One thing that John Rolfe did to transform the Virginia colony was to cultivate a different tobacco that the English liked. This in turn made the tobacco very profitable and transformed the economy of Virginia.
John Rolfe and John Smith were associated with the Colony of Virginia. They are also known for their relations with Pocahontas; she may have saved Smith's life and Rolfe eventually married her.
John Rolfe lived from 1585 to 1622 and was married to Pocahontas. His chief contribution to Virginia's economy was the cultivation of tobacco.
