The Holy Spirit within
Jesus came here to share the Gospel, which means 'good news'. If you have a Bible, go to John 3:16. He died on the cross for OUR sins! and told us that He loves us. Also see Romans 10:9.
It meant the same as it does today - a person who accompanies another person, and John, in Revelation, says it all for us: I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. (Revelation 1.9)
they shared his love and comfort
The four gospels in the New Testament of the Bible were written by different authors. The Gospel of Matthew was written by Matthew, a disciple of Jesus. The Gospel of Mark was written by Mark, who was a companion of Peter. The Gospel of Luke was written by Luke, a companion of the apostle Paul. The Gospel of John was written by John, one of Jesus's disciples.
There is nothing secret about Jesus or Christianity. The Bible makes it clear. If you want to 'meet' Jesus or share in the life God has provided through Jesus then you must be born again (born spiritually). Read John chapter 3, John 3:7 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'

Naturally they were scared , but John was there with Mary and the others.
The witnesses of Jesus after his resurrection were his disciples, including Peter, James, John, and others who saw him alive after his crucifixion.
The Gopsel of Mark was written around by John Mark, one of the apostles of Jesus. It was written around 60-70 A.D. Mark was not a disciple, but he was a companion of Paul on some of his missionary journeys. Others date the book to around 62 A.D.

As apostles of Jesus Peter, James, and John witnessed many miracles and teachings when they were with Jesus. They were called by Jesus to follow him and witness, first hand, the teachings that Jesus had to share. These men are considered part of Jesus' inner circle because they were some of the closest to him and made some of the biggest impacts to Christianity.
