According to NKJV there were two Johns in the New Testament. John the apostle was a fisherman before he met Jesus. His father Zebedee and his brother, James along with John were fishermen. John was the only apostle that witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus. While on the cross Jesus told John to take care of his mother, Mary. Which John devoutly did until Mary's death in around 50 A.D. John outlived all the other apostles all of whom died in martyrdom, except Judas of course. John wrote the Gospel of John, he also wrote 3 letters in The Bible, John I, II and III and he wrote The Revelation. John died approximately 100 A.D. And then there was John the Baptist was exactly that. He baptized many people (including Jesus) and was mistaken as "the Messiah" in which he quickly denied. He spread the Word of God.
Sts. John the Baptist & John the Apostle were 2 different people. The Baptist was raised by the Essenes(after the deaths of his own parents), & the Apostle came from a family of fishermen.
There is no reference in the Bible that says that John the Baptist was anything other than a priest. When John was too young his job was likely learning to become a priest. He was the Greatest man that ever lived, so he must have served God his entire lifetime.
He was a carpenter, following in his 'adopted'' father Joseph's trade. After called to his mission by God he then preached, whenever he had the opportunity, to talk about the kingdom of God.
He was a fisherman, along with his brother James. So were the brothers Peter and Andrew.
he was a baptist
