Depp's childhood was pretty normal. He liked to read, and was fascinated by London's Jack The Ripper. It's not surprising that Depp played Ripper-hunter Inspector Fredrick Abberline in From Hell. He liked anything to do with Evil Knievel, loved the TV show Hogan's Heros and of course loved music. As far as I know he never had any plans to be an actor. It was probably a huge surprise for him when that's what he ended up doing for a living.
