Edward VI came to the throne in 1547 at the age of 9 on the death of his father Henry VIII. His uncle was appointed Regent and what he did can be read in associated weblink. Edward was a sickly child and sdied at the age of 14 from tuberculosis in 1553. However just before Christmas 1552 he heard a sermon given by Archbishop ridley about the poor children, old and sick of London and before he died he set up three Royal Foundations, for the old, the sick and Christ's Hospital for the children, the latter still in existence today.
