Bartolomé de las Casas was born to a farming and merchant family that placed heavy emphasis on education. Childhood experiences piqued his interest in exploration and learning about the New World. From the age of 9, he studied Latin and at the age of 14, he went to Salamanca to study canon law in order to become a priest. (In his lifetime, he received two degrees in canon law: a 'bachillerato' at Salamanca and a 'licenciature' from Valladolid.) His first trip to the Americas was in 1502, at the age of 18; he lived, worked, and traveled throughout Hispaniola for four years. He was ordained a priest in 1510.
