There would be a total of 31 people in the Lewis and Clark expedition, but Lewis and Clark were the only ones who were permitted to write in the journals. Being that the instructions of what to write in them were given to Lewis only, and eventually Clark would know them, the others did not have the authority to do so.
Lewis and Clark kept journals so that they could report their discoveries to President Jefferson. At the time, Jefferson had just bout the Louisiana Territory and he needed to know what was over there. He chose Lewis, who was his personal secretary to go on an expedition and Lewis chose Clark to accompany him and be his second in command. They basically just needed to write down everything that would have been useful for president Jefferson.
Both Meriwether Lewis and William Clark wrote in the journals. Lewis was told to write down longitude, latitude, rivers, places, objects, weather, animal descriptions, native culture, language, food, customs, clothing, laws, the appearance of soil, of plants, minerals, and the times of the changing of the color of leaves. But because William Clark did not have any formal education, he would later become self-conscious of his almost constant misspellings in the journals.
he wanted them to find information about the louisiana territory
Lewis and Clark are famous for what they did because they were sent out to unknown land and set to explore and discover things like water routes to the pacific ocean and write a description of the territory
No, they did not. But they did write a documentary about wha they have seen, but you won't get that anywhere because it all went to president Thomas Jefferson.
i explored that my purse has sold yesterday.
Jefferson wanted to elicit no anger from other countries who had previously done some exploring. The letter contained instructions that described the expected guidelines that Lewis and Clark would be able to do so as to successfully complete the mission and draw the least controversy.
