Marco Polo was an Italian merchant adventurer. Marco Polo (1) trekked across Asia and was one of the first Europeans to make a detailed account of the cities, cultures, and technology of the places he went within the Far East. (10) Marco Polo and his father sewed gems and money into their clothes on their journey home in order to keep from being robbed of their belongings. (11) He also opened up the possibility for trading between the Europeans and the Far East.
