Dr. Mary Walker was a contract surgeon during the American Civil War 1861-1865.
Mary Edwards Walker taught at several schools throughout her career, but she is most notably associated with the Syracuse Female Academy in New York. She also worked as a teacher in other institutions, including the Washington, D.C. public schools. In addition to her teaching, she was a prominent surgeon and is well-known for her contributions during the American Civil War.
Mary Edwards Walker was a surgeon , she employed in the United States army, she fought for the Union as a nurse during the Civil war. Mainly an unpaid field surgeon near the Union front lines. Finally she became the first-ever female U.S. army surgeon.
The Medal of Honor. Decades after the Civil War ended the army set up a board to review the Medals of Honor awarded during the war, and they vacated about one thousand, including that to Dr. Walker. Dr. Walker was still alive, and was asked to return her Medal, but she refused to do so.
The Medal of Honor is awarded in the name of the Congress by the President of the United States (Commander in Chief of the US military). at least one woman has been awarded the MOH, shortly after its' establishment in 1862 during the American Civil War. Her name was Dr. Mary Walker, and she served as a contract surgeon.
