The modern pencil as we know it today was invented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. He replaced the traditional graphite and hollowed wood pencil with a mixture of graphite and clay that could be baked to create a uniform writing implement.
When Conte was nine, he carved a working violin. At the age of twelve, he painted images of the saints on the ceiling of his village's church, which people from across France came to see.
