Nicolas Appert was a French chef and confectioner who invented the airtight food preservation in 1810. He was being experimenting with various methods to preserve food, and his most successful one was one that consisted in placing the food in glass jars that he sealed with a cork and sealing wax before putting them in boiling water. He is called the 'Father of canning'.
