"The British are coming, the British are coming!"
The regulars are coming
The British are coming! The British are coming!
Paul Revere made propaganda against the British after the Boston Massacre. He was a blacksmith and in his engraving, he made the British look like murderers that were shooting defenseless colonists. This made more colonists turn against the British. Paul Revere was also given the job to warn the colonies when the British were coming. He would ring the church bell twice if they were coming by water, and once if they were coming by land. He had to give this message to all of the colonies.
I Cry at Night was created in 1978-01.
Paul Revere is known for the ride he made to warn the "rebels" of the approach of the British. This was before the American Revolutionary War began and the leaders were making plans to revolt against the British government. He made several rides to various communities. His most famous was his ride that began late on the night of April 18, 1775 to warn of the British march to Lexington and Concord to capture the leaders of the revolt. This lead to the first battle that was a prelude to the Revolutionary War.
Paul Revere was a citizen of the British colony of Massachusetts. He was born in America but was, at least until the American Revolution technically a British subject as were all colonists at the time. After the war, Revere like all colonist who chose to remain in America, was an American. His cry thought every Middlesex town that "The British are coming!" referred to the British regulars who were marching toward Lexington and Concord, and in fact according to Revere's memoirs, his exact phrase was "The regulars are coming out!" He would not have said that the British were coming because in his mind he was British as well.
