Poseidon had the ability to control the seas, and the creatures that lie within it. He was helpful to humans because he could bring the people a good harvest by bringing rain, or temporarily flooding the area to provide fertile land. He could also move the water in such a way as to create more land for the humans to build on. Poseidon also had the gift of being able to summon or calm sea monsters. This helped humans because if there was a sea monster terrorizing a town, the people in it would present offerings to Poseidon, and in return he would calm the sea monster. He could also keep sailors safe when they went on some sea voyage.
