Richard .M. Nixon went to China and improved relations between China and the United States. The Environmental Protection Agency was formed in December 1970 after President Nixon submitted a plan to Congress calling for the creation of the agency. Before the EPA was created, our nation had no central authority overseeing the protection of the environment. The Clean Air Act Extension, signed into law by President Nixon on Dec. 31, 1970, was arguably the most significant air pollution control bill in American history. It required the newly formed Environmental Protection Agency to create and enforce regulations to protect people from airborne pollution known to be hazardous to our health - specifically targeting sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone and lead. The Safe Drinking Water Act - which was proposed by Nixon and passed by Congress in 1974 was a turning point in the effort to protect the nation's lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands and other bodies of water. It was fundamental in protecting water and the public drinking water supply in the name of public health. The law requires actions to protect drinking water and a its sources, President Nixon signed the Endangered Species Act on Dec. 28, 1973. It was created to protect species in danger of extinction as a result of human activity. Nixon is the president who ended the draft. He also signed into law the National Cancer Act on the 23rd of December. The new law plowed federal funding into cancer research and is the reason why survival rates are currently sky-high. Due to a couple of his policies he managed to knock around $17 billion off the deficit in three years sweeping away 70 percent of the deficit in under one term. He Implemented the first Affirmative Action program and signed into law Title IX which made it illegal for federally funded education programs to discriminate based on sex. Also in 1970, seven states still enforced segregated schooling which seemed to set the states on a collision course with the rest of the Union. Nixon went down there and met with legislators from all seven Southern states, even traveling down to Louisiana to allay people's fears. Over several months, he did everything in his power to make sure segregation would not only be stamped out, but that it'd die peacefully-and it worked. Segregation vanished in education and not a drop of blood was spilled. And finally (and this may not be a good thing) he lowered the voting age.
