In 2002 Robby Benson was directing and producing television in LA, plus teaching Master of Fine Arts students classes in filmmaking, screenwriting, and acting for film at California Institute of the Arts.
In the fall of 2002 Robby and family fell in love with the mountains of NC when he flew in to teach a filmmaking seminar at the request of then Chancellor of Appalachian State, Frank Borkowski. The Benson family purchased a farm there in 2003, relocating from Los Angeles, and Robby was a full time artist in residence at Appalachian State, teaching a semester of classes to undergraduate students: filmmaking, acting for film, and screenwriting in the fall of 2003.
Robby's original musical Open Heart, which he had been working on with Karla DeVito and Stan Brown, was scheduled to be produced by The Cherry Lane Theatre in NYC February of 2004. His last class at Appalachian State was an intensive seminar for students interested in voice-over work in January of 2004, prior to leaving for the production of Open Heart.
