100 bc
Robert Fulton had many failures before his creation of the steamboat. He attempted to be an artist, build a submarine and construct a canal; all of which failed.
Robert Fulton was credited with two distighishable creations, not so much as the "inventor" but as the first successful attempts at such creations. One was a Steamboat, the other, a submarine.
Robert Fulton is primarily known for his work on developing the steamboat, but he also designed a submarine called the "Nautilus" in the early 19th century. Although Fulton's submarine was never fully operational or used in combat, it was one of the earliest attempts at creating a practical submersible vessel. His inventions significantly contributed to advancements in marine engineering, but the submarine itself did not achieve the same level of success as his steamboat.
The Nautilus. In 1801, a U.S. inventor contracted with France to build that country a submarine. France had known of the previous work Fulton had accomplished & believed he was the right man for the job.
