During the time of the Nazis St. Maximllian was taken to a concentration camp and one guy escaped the camp, so they said 10 will die. So they picked out 10 people and one of them, a man, pleaded with them not to kill him as he had a family. So St. Maximillian took this man's place. They were put in a cell for a 14 days and he still did not die. So eventually they gave him an injection of carbolic acid that killed him.

Fr. Kolbe was a Franciscan priest who was held as a captive in a German concentration camp during World War 2. When a prisoner escaped, the Germans were going to kill several other prisoners as punishment. Kolbe volunteered to take the place of one of the condemned men since that man had a family and children. He was starved for a time and then injected with carbolic acid to kill him.
