Saint Nicholas was Nikolaos of Myra, a Christian bishop and saint from the 4th century. Numerous miracles have been attributed to him and he is also known as Nikolaos, the Wonderworker. He was known for giving surprise gifts and did things like put coins of the shoes of those who left them outside their doors for him. He became the model for Santa Claus, whose name comes from the Dutch "Sinterklaas".
