The Hillary Step was named after Edmund Hillary because he was the first person to climb it.
Sir Edmund Hillary led the expeditionary team in 1957 to establish the New Zealand Scott Base facility. This team laid the supply lines to support the Scott Base facility's installations of original buildings. Interestingly, it is perhaps by way of this connection, that Mt Everest is called 'the third pole'.
