Shakespeare's father, John, moved to Stratford from Snitterfield before 1532, learning the trade of glover and tanner of leathers. He flourished and began to buy and sell farm products and wool. He was then elected to many civic positions: ale-taster of the borough in 1557; high bailiff or mayor in 1568; and chief alderman in 1571. John's fortunes changed and he went became a debtor and did not participate in his civil duties.
