Among the gospel authors only the author of Luke seems to have known anything about John the Baptist's family. It is very unlikely that the auther evangelists would have failed to pass on this important information had they known of it. Uta Ranke-Heinemann (Putting Away Childish Things) suggests that Luke's story of John the Baptist's infancy is not literally true, in which case we do not even know his father's name.
