In many cases, people needed to be very wealthy or even required a gift from a noble person in order to own land back then. In modern times, land ownership is much more common.

In America today people think they own their land, but unless they have the Land Patent on the land they may not own it.
You do not have to own the parcel of land in order to build on it. However there does have to be an agreement between you and that owner of the land. This type of situation is more common with family owned land.

If the home is permanently attached to the real estate (not a mobile home) then the owner of the real estate owns the home. if you build a home on another person's land, they own it. Perhaps the owner would allow you to move the structure. However, you would need to restore the land to its natural state.
He/she cannot sell your interest. You would need to sign the deed in order to convey your interest in the property to a new owner. A person cannot sell what they do not own and your ex doesn't own your interest in the property.
