In the New Testament the breaking of bread is an act of remembrance, nothing more.
The eating of the bread was intended to remind believers how the body of Christ was wounded, bruised, and broken for them; how he bore their sins in his own body on the cross, and bring to remembrance the love of Christ .
This is exactly what Jesus said:
Luke 22:19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
Paul writes the same to the Corinthians
1Corinthians 11:24 ........and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
Yes there was bread and wine in the New Testament. In Luke 22:-17-19 Jesus said the wine is my blood and the bread was his body. ;~)
