The Crusaders came to liberate the Holy Land from the "infidels" and woe to any Jews who lived along the route. Numerous Jewish communites encountered by traveling Crusaders were subjected to the increased religious fervor of the Crusaders, and were pillaged and massacred. There were several extensive pogroms, especially in Germany and France.

When the Crusaders conquered Jerusalem at the end of the First Crusade, they initiated a massive slaughter of the Jewish and Muslim inhabitants of the city.

The crusaders of the First Crusade took Jerusalem in 1099 and massacred the entire population. When told that there were Christians among the Muslims and Jews, the leaders simply said that God would sort them out in heaven.

The Crusaders, upon entering Jerusalem slaughtered just about everyone they came across. Crusaders have noted in their diaries from the period that the smell was nauseating and their horses were ankle-deep in blood wherever they went. They also killed local Christians because it was impossible to recognize what religion any particular civilian in the city was and argued that "God would sort out the saved from the damned".
