He named himself 'First Consul' in 1799and he named himself emperor in 1804.Napoleon named himself First Consul. He did this to try to convince other European states to stop their opposition to the French Revolution.
The Spaniards and the British tried to seize Saint-Domingue during the French Revolution because the French were too busy with their own revolution to fight for their colony. Given its strategic location and the availability of raw materials and minerals, both countries sought to control it.
At that time, the french society was divided in 3 parts: the nobles, the clergy (religious people like priest and monks), and the rest of the population (called le Tiers-Etat in french), who were mostly peasants. The two first parts had a lot of privileges. they payed less taxes (althought they were the richest), they were the only ones to have the right to hunt and fish, etc. The Tiers-Etat were very poor and so, they didn't have food, and the king didn't try to help them, no one cared. They were not pleased so they beheaded the king and his wife, and they killed a big part of the nobles. :)
Well, when Louis the XVI came into power, there was ginormous debt from Louis the XIV, and his spending spree, (which included Versailles) and to try and settle this, he raised taxes. Taxes were already high, wages low, and food prices ridiculous, and to add to it, they had an awful harvest the previous season. This made the peasants kind of break, because unrest had been building for quite a few years. The nobles and the church were exempt from taxes, but forced their own taxes, and lived lavishly. Nobles and the church were only three percent of the population, and that made the peasants upset that they controlled so much. But the absolute breaking point was probably Louis' stupid decision to raise taxes.
Try this: "The "Russian Revolution" was actually three revolutions: the 1905 Revolution, the February Revolution of 1917 and the October Revolution of 1917."

I will give you the answer... The French Revolution was when the French peasants became angry because the cost of bread was very high. They overthrew the king, and tried to kill every monarch in France. All of the European countries sent soldiers to try to stop this movement, but it continued on and off for twenty years.

The French revolution was the period of revolution in France at the end of the eighteenth century starting with the pre-revolution or the aristyocratic revolution in 1787 progressing to more radical events such as the strorming of the Bastillle, the rise of the Jacobins and Sans-cullottes. The Atlantic revolution refers to the idea of a period of many revolutions occurring arround the same time such as the American Revolution (the war of independence) the uprisings in other areas of Europe such ad in Holland and Geneva. The idea of the Atlantic revolution influencing the French revolution has become more criticised in recent years but if you want to know more try reading 'France and the Atlantic Revolution of the Eighteenth Century, 1770-1799' by Jacques Godechot.
