George Bass took about a month to sail around Tasmania in 1798. His voyage, which covered approximately 1,000 miles, was significant for mapping the coastline and contributing to the understanding of the region. Bass and his crew faced various challenges during the journey, including adverse weather conditions.
Bass Strait was named after sea explorer George Bass. In 1797, Bass sought sponsorship from Governor Hunter to determine whether a navigable strait existed between Van Diemen's Land and the Australian continent. It was on this journey that Bass discovered the strait that is now named after him. His journey was made between December 1797 and late February 1798.
Tasmania, then Van Diemen's Land, was proven to be an island following the journey of George Bass and Matthew Flinders. Bass and Flinders circumnavigated Van Diemen's Land in 1798-99, completing their journey on 7 January 1799.
