Gladiators were mainly of two types - actual gladiators (a lot like modern boxers) or prisoners of war.

Actual gladiators were fighters who wished to test their battle skills as training or sport in the battle arena (eg. Colosseum in Rome). These fought until they were tired or wounded or resigned. Killing each other was a very rare occasion and these gladiators were given money by the emperor for their skills.

Prisoners of war caught by the Romans were a nuisance for them. To get rid of them, the Romans thought of a bright idea. They forced the prisoners to fight against their cellmates (even wild animals) with minimal weapons. A group of people left out were later executed. These people did not know how to fight (even though the Romans tried to train them to make it interesting). In the Roman Empire, Gladiators were mostly used for entertainment; for both the Emperor and the masses of citizens at the arena. Gladiators were basically slaves made to fight for the pleasure of the audience. :D hope I helped!
