Goering initially tried to draw the RAF out by attacking channel shipping. Then radar stations were attacked but the Germans did not realise their significance and in any case because of the nature of their construction they were difficult to put out of action although Ventnor was out of action for a while. The Luftwaffe then attacked RAF airfields and according to some the RAF was on its uppers and only managed to stagger on with difficulty once the attack shifted to London. However there are accounts of the Luftwaffe visiting nonmilitary airfields on a regular basis and also several of the RAF squadrons had dispersed grass fields suitable for operations and unknown to the Germans. Goering's aim was to destroy the RAF and he did not have a real plan to accomplish that since he thought that a head on clash between the two forces would end with RAF destroyed.
