Hannibal of Carthage was a famous antagonist of Rome. During the Second Punic War (218-202 BCE) he achieved an amazing feat by not only having his army cross the Alps, but by bringing war elephants on that march.
It is generally accepted that Hannibal lost roughly half his force in crossing the Alps and that he arrived in Italy with only a few of the 37 war elephants he set out with.
