He gave a series of paid lectures in Athens, which he subsently wrote down, titled Histories (in Greek = 'Researches').

In these he gave a fairly systematic account of the background to the events preceding and surrounding the Persian invasion of Greece. Previous historical accounts were fragmented, and he has become known a 'the Father of History', as he showed how to write history with cause and effect rather than just a series of tales.
