The main goal of a martyr is not canonization. If it were so, the mere act of martyrdom would not be a Holy Sacrifice but an egotistical trip. Not all martyrs are canonized and not all Saints are martyrs. Canonization is Catholic term and it is a privilege granted to certain individuals who after a rigorous study of their life on earth (holiness and/or supernatural capabilities) and deeds after death (miracles attributed to the intersession of the individual in question) prove to be examples of perfect communion with Christ. Other religions have saints but they are not canonized because this is something reserved for the Catholic Faith. A martyr is someone who suffers to the death due to their strong belief in a cause or a faith. This in itself is not attached to a religion. Canonization is a process that may take decades if not centuries. Martyrdom is based on intention and the term might be used right after the death of an individual. In modern times, martyrdom is something that has even been used to describe someone who suffers due to the belief in a cause and it does not have to include death.
