What was going on with Apollo 13 when the accident occurred?

The crew had just finished their live broadcast for TV. Jack Swigert flipped the switch to stir the O2 tanks. One of the circuits inside the tank sparked, causing the oxygen to ignite, rupturing the tank.

Who stirred the tanks on Apollo 13?

John Swigert was at the commanding seat when the Apollo 13 crew got the call to stir the oxygen tanks.

What was the second day of Apollo 13 like?

The second day of Apollo 13 was much the same as the second days on Apollo 8, Apollo 10, Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 before it with the crew performing a brief television tour for audiences back on Earth of their spacecraft while coasting to the moon. Astronauts Jim Lovell and Fred Haise also powered up the Lunar Module Aquarius to check its systems before their planned Lunar landing on April 14th 1970.Of course, mere hours after completing their television broadcast Jack Swigert was instructed to stir the hydrogen and oxygen tanks, famously causing an explosion which crippled the spacecraft and made impossible any Lunar landing.

What happened to the Apollo 13 mission to the moon?

Original Answer:During the Apollo 13 mission to the mon, just as the astronauts were about to separate from the command nodule there was a blast , and the trip to the moon was abandoned and the three astronauts Jim Lovell , jack Swigert and Fred Haise had to use the lunar module to return to earth. So Jim Lovell is the only man in history to twice reach the moon and still not to walk on it sadly.Improved Answer:The above answer is pretty good. Except that the explosion did not occur as any separation activity was occurring or about to occur. The mission had not even reached lunar orbit. The crew had just finished a routine television broadcast (that was not aired) when NASA asked the crew to stir the oxygen tanks. This is a routine task to keep the gas from freezing and stratifying in the tanks. During the stir, a wire sparked, and an explosion occurred.Gemini, Apollo, and Shuttle used fuel cells for power. These devices combine oxygen and hydrogen to produce electricity, and the byproduct is water that is safe to drink. Without Oxygen to supply the fuel cells, the Apollo Command/Service module quickly lost power., and any source of sustained water for the astronauts. This meant that the three astronauts had to use the two man lunar module as a lifeboat for a slingshot trip around the moon. The commend module could not be jettisoned as it had the only heat shield to get them back to earth.

How may Apollo missions have landed people on the moon?

12 people landed on the moon; they were all from the Apollo programme because America were the only ones who landed on the moon Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17. Additional Interesting Information: Apollo 10 went to the moon and descended the Lunar Module (LM) to several thousand feet short of a landing, but did not touch down. NASA had actually not filled the Ascent Module with enough fuel for them to land, just in case they got the urge to do land, against the flight plan. This was done as a preparatory step for the next mission, Apollo 11, where Neil Armstrong actually executed the first touch down on the moon with only 17 seconds to spare in his fuel tank. Buzz Aldrin was the pilot that accompanied Armstrong on this historic voyage: "That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.' Apollo 13 suffered an explosion in transit and was forced to abort its landing and luckily returned to the Earth safely. It has been called by NASA as its greatest successful failure. Actually, Apollo 13's explosion was a coil in the oxygen tank that had been crippled 2 years before launch, so on April, 13, 1970, when Jack Swigert flipped the switch to stir the oxygen tanks, the coil caused a spark and exploded the tank and tore apart a section of the service module, as well .
