John 2:13-20 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!" His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me."[a]

A.T. Robinson calls the period between Jesus' baptism and Passover of A.D. 27, "The Year of Obscurity." Only John's Gospel records these events. Jesus came to Jerusalem in the spring of A.D. 27 for the Feast of Passover. Jesus was greatly offended by the practices he saw in the temple. A place of prayer and worship had become a market place. Jesus made a whip and drove both men and animals from the temple. He overturned the tables of the moneychangers.

The merchants in the temple were referred to by Jesus as "robbers." (Luke 19:45, 46; John 2:13-16) They are robbers because they demand exorbitant prices from those who have little alternative but to buy from them the animals needed for sacrifice. So Jesus views these business dealings as a form of extortion or robbery. This suggests that they were making excessive profits. The Jewish Mishnah shows that Jesus' words were no exaggeration. It reports about the time when a pair of doves cost a golden denar or twenty-five silver denars. This exorbitant price moved Simeon the son of Gamaliel to swear by the temple, saying: "I will not suffer the night to pass by before they cost but a [silver] denar." This evidently means that doves were being sold at a rate twenty-five times higher than they were actually worth. That indeed was "robbery."
